Alexis Ohanian is an American-Armenian internet entrepreneur and investor. He is popularly known for being the co-founder and executive chairman of Reddit along with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz. Ohanian also co-founded the capital firm Initialized Capital, which helped launch the travel search website Hipmunk, and started the social enterprise Breadpig. He was also a partner at Y Combinator.
Early Life
Alexis Kerry Ohanian was born in Brooklyn, New York. He went to Howard School in Ellicott City, Maryland, where he gave the student address for his graduating class in 2001.
Career
Alexis Ohanian graduated from the University of Virginia in 2005 with degrees in commerce and history. Ohanian and his friend Steve Huffman pitched the idea MyMobileMenu to Y Combinator. Another idea that they came up with was reddit.com and the rest is history.
At his University, Ohanian was inducted into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and was an active member.
In 2007, Ohanian launched Breadpig, which produced geeky merchandise and gives the proceeds to charity. In 2010, he spent three months working in microfinance as a Kiva fellow in Yerevan, Armenia. He helped in launching the travel search website Hipmunk in 2010.
He was given the title “Ambassador to the East” by the early-stage venture firm Y Combinator. On June 5, 2020, Ohanian resigned from his post on Reddit’s board and requested a black candidate to be given his position in response to the murder of George Floyd. Michael Seibel subsequently replaced Ohanian.
On July 21, 2020, it was announced that Ohanian would be the lead investor in a primarily female group that was awarded a new franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League, the top level of the sport in the U.S. The name of the team was coined Angel City FC which started playing in 2022.
In 2020, Ohanian ended his role as Managing Partner at Initialized. One year later, he announced a new venture capital firm he is leading, known as “776”.
