Despite his athletic background, Elliott attended the more academically focused John Burroughs School in Ladue, Missouri, where he was a three-sport star in football, basketball, and track and field. He was also a baseball player. He was a member of the John Burroughs Bombers football team.

He took part in the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl. Despite overwhelming support and pressure from his parents’ alma mater, the University of Missouri, Elliott chose Ohio State University. 

Elliott rushed for 262 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns as a true freshman at Ohio State University in 2013, mostly as a gunner on special teams as a backup to starter Carlos Hyde.

When Hyde left for the NFL in 2014, Elliott took over as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback. During the season, Elliott was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Conference team.

Ezekiel began the 2015 season by rushing for over 100 yards in 10 straight wins, including 274 yards against Indiana on October 3. (the second most all-time by an Ohio State player).  However, after a 14-17 loss to Michigan State on November 21, 2015, Elliott announced his intention to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

Elliott, a talented track and field athlete, competed in sprinting and hurdling events at the state level. His best 100-meter dash time is 10.95 seconds, 200-meter dash time is 22.05 seconds, 110-meter hurdles time is 13.77 seconds, and 300-meter hurdles time is 37.52 seconds. His outstanding performances earned him the title of ‘Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year’ in Missouri.

The Dallas Cowboys chose Elliott in the 2016 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $25 million rookie contract that included a $16 million signing bonus.

After only nine games in 2016, he became the second Cowboys rookie to rush for over 1000 yards in a single season. His overall season performance was outstanding, and he was named to his first Pro Bowl.

The Cowboys restructured Elliott’s contract on August 27, 2021, converting $8.6 million of his base salary for the upcoming season into a signing bonus to save salary cap space. Despite dealing with lingering knee and ankle injuries for much of the season, Elliott was able to start all 17 games and rush for 1,002 yards and ten touchdowns on 237 carries, while also catching 47 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. He had two games of 100 yards or more and four games of multiple touchdowns.

Elliott rushed for 31 yards in a 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round. Elliott was playing with a partially torn PCL, which he suffered in Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers, it was revealed after the game.

After signing his rookie contracts, Elliott purchased a new home for his parents, Dawn and Stacy Elliott. He attended Ohio State University and majored in marketing. He was close to fellow Buckeye teammate Kosta Karageorge, a walk-on defensive end. Karageorge’s death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head drew national attention.

Elliott became a shareholder of OnCore Golf Technology, Inc., a golf ball manufacturer based in Buffalo, New York, in August 2020. 

Elliott was cited by police in May 2021 after one of his dogs bit and injured two people in his Frisco neighbourhood.
