Thanasi Kokkinakis Career

Athanasios “Thanasi” Kokkinakis started playing tennis at a very young age and had an excellent junior tennis career. While playing junior tennis, Kokkinakis was ranked as high as No. 10 in the world.

Kokkinakis went on to win one junior Grand Slam title, the doubles title at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships partnering with Nick Kyrgios. Additionally, he is also the runner-up in two additional junior Grand Slam singles finals (Australian Open and US Open) in 2013.

Soon, Kokkinakis turned professional. He began his professional career in March 2011 at the Australia F3 Future’s event at the age of 14. Further, he recorded his first professional win at the Australia F4 event.

Furthermore, in the following few years, Kokkinakis couldn’t perform well and was marred with injuries. Finally, in 2015, Kokkinakis made a major breakthrough in his career. For the first time in his career, Kokkinakis broke into the top 100 world rankings. He also won the 2015 Challenger BNP Paribas Primrose (Bordeaux). He also had his best Major singles performance at the 2015 French Open by reaching the third round.

Kokkinakis ended the year 2015 with a world ranking of 80. Also, in 2015, he achieved his career-high singles ranking of No. 69.

Next, in 2016, Kokkinakis couldn’t deliver any noteworthy performance, mostly due to his ongoing injuries. He spent most of 2016 recovering from various injuries.

Kokkinakis entered 2017 with lots of hope. He played quite well and in 2017, he even managed to reach his first career ATP final event. Kokkinakis played his first career ATP final at the Los Cabos Open. For reaching the final, he defeated players like Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz. However, in the final, Kokkinakis lost to Sam Querrey. Finally, Kokkinakis ended 2017 with a singles rank of 209.

The following few years were not that great for Kokkinakis’s professional career. He didn’t perform well and was mostly out of the game due to injuries.

In 2021, Kokkinakis made his much-awaited return after recovering from injuries. He played significantly well and consistently made a string of quarterfinals at challenger events. Kokkinakis even reached the finals at the Biella Challenger. He then went on to win the Biella Challenger, defeating Enzo Couacaud in the final.

Kokkinakis also reached the final of a second Challenger for 2021 at the 2021 Sibiu Open where he was defeated by Stefano Travaglia in the final. Kokkinakis ended 2021 with an ATP singles rank of 171.

In 2022, Kokkinakis reached the final at the 2022 Adelaide International 2. He then won the tournament by defeating Arthur Rinderknech in the final. By winning this tournament, Kokkinakis won his career’s first ATP Tour-level singles title.

Next, at the 2022 Australian Open, Kokkinakis made history. Kokkinakis partnered with Nick Kyrgios to participate in the doubles event. Eventually, Kokkinakis and Kyrgios won their first doubles Grand Slam in straight sets, defeating Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the finals.

As a result, Kokkinakis moved to the top 50 in the doubles rankings at No. 46 on 31 January 2022.
