The world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev opens his Vienna Open campaign against the world No. 94 Nikoloz Basilashvili in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
Daniil Medvedev
If we go by the numbers, the former world No. 1 has not had a bad season. However, he would have expected to have won a few more titles after winning the US Open last year. The Russian star reached the finals of the Australian Open and followed it up with a run to the semi-finals at the Mexican Open. At the Libema Open, Medvedev faced a shock defeat against Tim van Rijthoven in straight sets. In the Halle Open that followed, Medvedev again lost in the finals to Hubert Hurkacz.
Medvedev won his first title this season at the Los Cabos Open. In Cincinnati and Astana, he made it to the semi-finals. Astana was his last tournament and he had to retire during his semi-final match against Novak Djokovic after feeling “a strange pop” in his adductor. This will be his first tournament after the Astana Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili
The 30-year-old has had a quiet season so far. His best result came in the Qatar Open, where he reached the finals. Eventually, he lost in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut. Other than that, his quarter-final appearance at the BMW Open was the only other bright spot.
The Georgian has also had his share of struggles in his personal life. He was recently cleared of abusing his ex-wife and this should help him play more freely in the tournaments to come. Basilashvili most recently played in the Sofia Open last month and lost in the first round against Fernando Verdasco.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not crossed paths as yet.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in straight sets.
