The world No. 12 Jannik Sinner kicks off his Vienna Open campaign against the world No. 86 Cristian Garin in the round of 32.
Jannik Sinner
The 21-year-old has had a successful season thus far. He won the Croatia Open title and gave a good account of himself at three of the four majors this year. In the Australian Open, the Wimbledon, and the French Open, Sinner made it to the quarter-finals.
The Italian sensation was quite impressive during his run to the semi-finals at the Sofia Open. He faced another talented youngster, Holger Rune, in the semis. After a couple of tight sets, Sinner was forced to retire with an ankle injury during the fag end of the third stage with the score at 5-2 in favor of the Swiss youngster. The Vienna Open will be Sinner’s first tournament since the semi-final encounter against Rune.
Cristian Garin
The 26-year-old has blown hot and cold this season. He has shown promising signs in a few tournaments and that should give him confidence going forward. The Chilean No. 2 made it to the semi-finals in Houston. At Wimbledon, Garin reached the quarter-finals and this was his first-ever appearance at that stage of a major. He eventually lost to Nick Kyrgios.
At the recently concluded Stockholm Open, Garin won his first-round match against Jason Kubler comprehensively in straight sets. However, his run ended in the following round after a loss against Holger Rune. Garin will go into the match against Sinner as the underdog but he has already pulled off a few upsets this season and that should hold him in good stead.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets.
